The following is some history, which I hope you will find interesting:

When I graduated from Al-Markaziya high school in 1970 and started Baghdad University Medical College, we were doing our best to compete with boys from Kulliyat Baghdad by trying to convince ourselves that we were cleverer!

They were much more superior to us in the first 6 months, with their much better English.

We caught up and, we like to think, we overtook them afterwards.

However, at the end of 6th year medical college, it was a Kulliyat Baghdad graduate who had the highest marks. Dammit!

Is Al-Thanawiya Al-Markaziya still considered to be a good school? or has its standards deteriorated?

In our high school exams, questions were tougher than the years before or after us. Therefore, the Baghdad University Medical college accepted as low as 83.5% average in my year (while the year before, you needed 88% to secure a place in it).

Out of the 20 people with the highest average in Iraq:

5 were from Kulliyat Baghdad
6 from Al-Markaziya (4 of them were from Class A, my class, I was one of them.....ahem!!!).
3 were girls, from all over Iraq
and 6 boys from the rest of Iraq
The top mark in Iraq was 96% achieved by Goran Al-Talabani (Class D in Al Markaziyah). He is a Doctor and I think he is practising in England now. Our President Jalal Al-Talabani is actually his uncle.

The second highest mark was Mahir Shakir Mahir (from Kulliyat Baghdad). He unfortunately died a few years ago from cancer. He was a Consultant General Surgeon in Newham Hospital, London, and a very dear friend of mine.
A girl called Norhan was the 3rd, I can not remember her father's name (probably something like Jameel or shakir). she graduated as a doctor and I am sure that she would have had an outstanding future (anyone knows a successful lady doctor, about 55 years old and called Norhan?
The 4th was Adnan Hameed Yaqoot Al-A'Rajee (Markaziyah, Class A). In my opinion, he was cleverer than all the others and missed becoming the 1st on Iraq because of a silly mistake in Mathmatics.

Anyone knows any of the above people?

Also, I remember that a Jew achieved a very high average, which should secure him a place in Bagdad Medical College. He was one of 2 who failed the Medical College interview (the other person was a disabled person with achondroplasia). The Jew person then went to College of science, and his name was at the very top of the list in Science College (near 3antar square in Adhamiya).

Please do not consider this as "discussing politics". Whether that was right or wrong, it is a historical fact and everyone is entitled to know about.

Really interesting statistics , I liked the part of Baghdad college winning at the end ,HURRAH.

I sadly dont recognize any of the former mentioned .Also, I'm sad to inform u that Markazeya is not considered one of the top schools any more.

Al Markaziya used to be a very good high school. Things deteriorated and the Ministry of Education then did not pay attention to Al Gharbiya middle school and Al Markaziya high school along with the other schools in Iraq. The newer ''distinguished" schools were established later and they were a really good move because they were for boys and for girls and they increased in number gradually.

I hope all of these schools will rise and shine again very soon.

By the way, my father graduated from Al Markaziya in 1971 to go to the Medical College of Baghdad University and graduate in 1977. You might know him; his name is Kutaiba Nu'man Al Adhami.
