Dear friends,

IELTS is now one of the main topics of discussions among students and graduated doctors who are intending to travel abroad.

It is the key to enter any educational institution in the UK, Australia and Canada, and it is also valuable in searching for work there or for immigration purposes.

I started reading for this test with the three well known Cambridge textbooks with their cassettes. After I finished practicing the tests in these books, I read two additional textbooks about the IELTS.

First book is called 101 in IELTS, or something like that. Basically it contains 101 hints in passing the test.

Second book was "Reading for IELTS" which contains only reading practice tests.
I felt these two books were very helpful for me.

Of course there were some great resources on the web, like the forums on www.rxpgonline.com which contains many topics related to examinations overseas, one of which is IELTS.

Speaking was a real difficulty for me, as I did not have the chance to speak English properly throughout my life. But once I started to prepare for the test, I practiced a lot with my friends which helped me a lot.

Writing was not a great problem, because I was a lecture writer when I was in College for many years, and I had good understanding of the style and grammar in English. I just had to tune up my abilities to fit the required level to pass the exam.

However, the most focused preparation period was the week before the exam. I arrived in Syria one week before my exam and visited the British Council and was able to use their resources and chat in English with people there.

I managed to pass this test from the first attempt with a score of 7.5/9, and with 9/9 in Reading, and 7 in speaking, 7.5 in listening, and 7 in writing.

I feel that this test is not hard to pass, you just have to learn how to enjoy using the English language, and with some practice, you will definitely pass it without a hurdle.

Dear Gayath, I think you got it wrong.
I hope this will benefit you all guys...

IELTS {International English Language Testing System}
A test taken to assess some1's English language proficiency..It is accepted worldwide and specially in the UK, Australia and Canada (since the latters are part of the Commonwealth) as well as many other countries and higher education institutes...

USMLE {United States Medical Licensing Examination} (the one u mentioned)
A test taken in 3 parts to get into the US medical system and may helps you to obtain a license to practice Medicine in the US [has nothing to do with the English Language]

and for you information

TOEFL {Test Of English as a Foreign Langauge}
The same as IELTS except for its the most recognized English language test in the US and many other countries

PLAB {Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board}
A test taken to obtain a certificate from the General Medical Council of Britain which is equivalent to MBChB.... It is the first step in the process of getting into the UK's medical system

Bye 4 now my friends.

Thanks for posting back dear friends. I am sure you all have good abilities in English and you won't find any of the above exams difficult to pass.
