hi all

what i wanna do here is tell u about my experience in studying books and talk about some myths about lectures and books.

1st, we always hear that books r too long and lectures r easier to study, well that's just not true, if u check some topics in ur medicine lecture and then in davidson for example then u'd find some topics r more detailed and others r more brief but u will also see that in a book, it's more organized and there r no mistakes. i think the subjects that r briefer r much more, check the infections in davdison and u'll see how brief they r but u will understand it and there r lots of pics.

2nd, some say if u study in books, u fail. well, here is a fact, in 6th year, i only studied in books, didn't study anything in lectures (except in pediatrics final exam coz u know the subjects of pediatrics r not in order so if i study in a book, i'd be studying lots of extra stuff). so i studied in books and i passed with good marks.

the point is u don't have to study in lectures, u have another choice, just choose what suits u.

i really don't see what r the merits of lectures over books?

let's discuss this and i hope with time more students will study in books

بس اذا تريد تفتهم موضوع صعب فأقراه بالكتاب

مساء الخير.احب اشارك بهذا الموضوع الحلو اني رأيي ان الكتاب افضل بكثير من الملازم لان الملازم مع احترامي للي يكتبها بيها هواية اخطاء املائية وعلميةبس هو مو صوجهم مرات يكون خط الدكتور مو واضح.الكتاب يفهم اكثر ويعطي امثلة اكثر الملزمة مختصرة كلش ومرات الاختصار يكون غامض.والكتاب موكلش صعب اني بالنسبة الي اشوف قرايته سهلة بس مع الاسف اكثرهم يتعاجزون يقرون بالكتاب

if u want brief, there r books for review, they brief and much better than lectures as they r organized and written by professors (not students who no matter what can't be good enough) and at least when u r studying u know that the info u r reading is certainly true. i saw many really stupid mistakes in lectures like "intestinal pneumonia", how am i supposed to trust someone who doesn't know "intestinal" from "interstitial".

if u want review books, try NMS or blueprints (even briefer) or many others, u can ask if u want more details.

and the medicine NMS , it is too long specially for the non-sixth stage because it is too JAAAF

اي اني هم جنت اقرة بهذا الكتاب جنت اسمي الكتاب الاحمر
but also if u buy NMS ob/gyn it's really so cool, it's brief but enough for our study and exams. as u may know since last year ob/gyn questions started to be all mcq so this NMS book is excellent for this type of questions, i sttudied in it in 6th year and i got very good in ob/gyn, i didn't study the lectures but there r a couple of topics that r not there in this book so i studied them in "essential" like obstructed labor and malpresentation. in the exam i was about to laugh as the questions seemed to be copied from the NMS

yeah i really enjoyed studying in davidson, it was cool, especially those tables at the start of each chapter, these r important. yeah sure davidson and macloid are great, i think it's also a good idea to buy some mcq book, u will enjoy testing urself after finishing a chapter (for me i got harrison's mcq). i don't know about nms medicine, haven't seen it

and about surgery, why not u can study it in books, for me i studied surgery in NMS and the urology in bailey, i didn't study the lectures. guys, don't be afraid of bailey, it will really make u understand stuff and it's just what we need, i mean if it's any briefer then it's not good enough and u don't need to study everything like the procedures of the operations u just read them and not memorize them, like my dear friend farah says, "study smartly"

i think that more than 75% of our surgery lectures are summerized from Bailey and Love... they are great... specially in the 5th stage

For me i really like studying in Davidson, but for surgery or Paediatrics i think our lectures r really good.

One day i studied appendicitis in Baily & there was nothing more than the lecture except for the operation.

Another thing if Gyn\obs won't be MCQ , don't u think it's hard to answer essay questions from books?

I used to read in books at the 1st 2 years and it was wonderful but after that I sticked to lectures although books are better...

After that I read in Davidson, Mcleod and that's it... I really found reading books better but it needs you to be active and cope with it all the time

did u read appendicitis in the old bailey or the new one? the new one is so cool besides if the lectures look like the book, this means students r copying bailey into the lectures so why not study in bailey, why do i need someone to copy it for me in papers!!

no even if questions were assay, still u can answer perfectly. professors don't want u to write exactly what they said in their lectures (this is a myth) they only care that what u write in the exam is correct and organized. guys, science is science and u can study in any book u want and u will get good marks.

Well I really salute you Hammodi and your missions, I hope this one won't be M:I 4

I just want to say that it is important to read in books, but it's more important to attend the lectures.
Guys look at it this way: the professor is someone who's summarizing years of experience and knowledge and presenting it to you first-hand, and no matter what happens; the words of a professor would always echo in your mind in stressful times (exams, hospital, clinic, etc...) whilst a text you memorize may be forgotten easily.

A doctor once gave me an advice (this is to go with your last reply Hammodi):
"Study in wherever you want but answer from wherever your professor wants".
