What happened is true and I am sharing it for others to learn.

In 1975, and while we were being trained by the great Professor Hashim Makki Al-Hashimi, in Madinat Al-Tib General Surgery outpatient clinic, a 17 - 18 year old 3orbiyah girl was brought in by her father (m3aggal) and brother.

The father said "take her and check her tummy!"

Professor Al-Hashimi then laid her on the examination bench and after a quick exam, whispered asking the girl if she was ever married. She said "NO!"

Professor Al-Hashimi then shouted in English calling us with a big smile: "come on boys! (our group were boys only), have a quick check on this young lady's abdomen. She is obviously pregnant and I can feel the foetus's upper limbs, lower limbs and the head, there, there and there!"

We then watched him picking the phone and he spoke to his wife, who was a Gynaecology professor in the same hospital.

He said, in English and while the father was still standing around wathing the huge interest that his daughter was generating: "My dear wife, I am sending you a young girl who is pregnant, though not married. Her father and brother are with her and they seem to be very edgy and anxious"

The girl seemed to have given up to her fate and obviously was resigned and waiting to be taken away by her father to be slaughtered after they discover her pregnancy.

Al-Hashimi then put down the phone and started talking to the father in Arabic:

"Hajji! I am glad that you brought your daughter in time. She has a serious illness. She has a water sac - cyst in her tummy and a gynaeclogist will remove it for her today!"

The father seemed extremely relieved and suddenly became very cheerful thanking everyone profusely.

After the girl went out, he turned round and told us: "I have just saved her neck"

I must admit that in my study, I learnt on that day more than any other.

Hashim Makki Al-Hashimi was one of the greatest teachers that our College has ever seen. I hope he is still live and healthy

I'm just wondering at which month was she?&what happened to the fetus?did they do an induced abortion for her or what?

As for the above 2 questions, these are my answers:

Dr Hashim Makki Al-Hashimi was about 40-45 years when he was teaching us in 1975. that makes him now definitely in his 70s.

I suppose the foetus was about 3-7 months. We were not much trained in Obstetrics at the time (4th year) so we had to just go by what Al-Hashimi was saying.

Al-Hashimi said that he was able to feel the limbs of the foetus. The belly was quite large but not as large as when 8 or 9 months..

I have no doubt that abortion was the right thing. In my opinion, if a pregnancy endangers the life of the mother, then it should be terminated regardless of the advancement in pregnancy term.

In this case, there was a considerable risk to the mother's life and, consequently, the baby will also die with the mother anyway.

If that happens in England, then I am totally against abortion, unless seriously threatens life of mother (and in cases of pregnancy as a result of rape).

In England, 1 in 3 children in school are children of unmarried women.
