MD stands for Medicinae Doctor or Medical Doctor as commonly known. This is the degree given for medical graduates in US based on the degrees that were given by the scottish universities established there after America was discovered.
By the way, if you graduate from a medical school that does not give an MD degree and you complete the USMLE steps and the registration as a doctor in US, you can say you have MD!
